fic_variations Prompt/Claim: Work // Mark Cohen
Spoilers: Tune Up #2
Warnings: Maureen The Drama Queen
Words: 864
Count: 4/5
Author's Notes: In which Mark is blindsided by Maureen, and Joanne has one line and no idea what's going on. Honestly, my Mark is such a 'nice guy'...and such a pushover.
"So how does an unemployed street artist meet a lawyer? You both walk into a bar or something?"
"Marky-"
"No wait, she passed the bar, and saw you passed out in the alley behind the bar?"
"Now wait just a minute-"
"I thought you hated lawyers. Scum of the Earth. Bloodsucking leech-tics were your exact words I think-"
"That was just copy-write lawyers. Joanne's different-"
"What does she do?"
"Environmental law."
"In New York?"
Maureen frowned at him. "Mark, I know this is rough, but I...I'm a different person than when we first started going out. You knew I was bisexual when we met, and now, I've learned new things about myself this past month-"
"Month?"
"Week." She corrected quickly. "This past week, and I really, really feel as though I need to try and embrace my lesbian side. Try something new, you know?"
"Sounds to me like you've been embracing your lesbian side for a month now." He muttered. "Along with a whole lot of lesbian-"
"Don't finish that sentence." Maureen hissed suddenly, leaning forward. "Joanne's here, she just walked in."
"What?" He nearly yelped in a completely undignified way, jumping up from his seat. "I'm leaving."
"No! Look, I wanted you two to meet, and so-I invited her."
"And what? I already told you, there is no way in Hell I'm having a threesome with you and that woman-"
"Please Mark. I was just hoping that, I don't know, maybe you two could be friends."
"Friends? Maureen, I wouldn't be friendly with the guy who was taking my spot, why would I be nice to this woman? I'm leaving, and that's-"
"Wait wait wait-no, it's not her."
“Thank God.”
She frowned up at him. “Sit down Mark. I wasn’t this bad about Roger when I first met him.”
“I wasn’t fucking Roger when you first met him either!”
“You might as well have been.” She snapped back. “Every five minutes it was Roger this and Roger that. You’ve done more for Roger the entire year we’ve been dating than you ever did for me.”
“Like what?”
“You bought all of Roger’s food-”
“He wouldn’t remember to eat otherwise-”
“And we always split the bill. Each of the five times we actually went out to eat. You cleaned up after him-”
“I cleaned my apartment-”
“You did all his laundry.”
“I lived with him, you think I wanted to smell that crap every day?”
“And that-” He leaned back in his chair, her finger suddenly pointed directly in his face. “-is what you always did for him.”
“What?”
“You made excuses. Every day. For Roger. Roger? Could do no wrong in your eyes. You look up to him like most guys looked up to their older brothers.”
“You’re breaking up with me because I got along with my roommate?
“Um, Maureen?”
“Joanne!”
“No…” He nearly groaned, realizing what had just happened.
“Baby, this is Mark-” Maureen was gesturing between them, but he wasn’t listening.
“You tricked me.”
“You stayed on your own. He’s-”
“I was just leaving.” He jumped up, heading for the exit on autopilot.
“I’ll be right back Jo baby.” He could hear Maureen’s footsteps catching up behind him, and just as he got to the café door, she grabbed his arm
"Fine. Go. Be immature. But I just wanted you to know-”
“Know what? How much happier you’re going to be now that you don’t have me anymore? What exactly am I supposed to get out of meeting Joanne?”
“I don’t know, okay? Closure. Acceptance. Something that would make it easier on you.”
“I…what?” Now he was thoroughly confused, and Maureen was looking at him like he was the one not making sense.
“Marky, I know I screwed up, royally, I just…really, really wanted us to end on good terms.”
“Well then. I hope you’re happy together.” He said, no inflection in his voice. “Mazel tov.”
“Oh, please don’t do the Jewish thing-”
“Hebrew.”
“Whatever. You do that to your mom and sister. I want us to be friends again. I hate fighting, I hate all this stupid drama-” He couldn’t quite hold back a snort at that, and she grinned at him hopefully. “I want…shalom. That’s right, isn’t it? Peace? I want peace?”
He sighed, closing his eyes and leaning against the door. “Yes it is, and yes, we pretty much have it. I really do want you to be happy. And sure I want to be friends, just...not with Joanne.”
“Mark.”
“Yet, anyway. So...you’re set. Bye.”
"Hey!" She jumped and caught him by the sleeve as he turned to leave again. "One last thing. You'll still be my production manager, right? I'm aiming for Christmas Eve, and you know I can't start over now. Marky?"
He waited a moment, just waited for her to pout her lips like she always did, and then sighed. He sighed like he was giving in, when he’d never really considered getting out in the first place.
"Yes."
She smiled, that ten million dollar smile that he'd fallen for in the first place. Grabbing his face between her palms, she planted a kiss on his forehead.
"Thanks Pookie!"
"Yeah, yeah...Joanne’s waiting. Enjoy lunch."

Date: 2006-08-23 06:45 am (UTC)Seriously. I know you're totally Mark/Joanne/Maureen, but seriously, I just love this because it's so true to the musical and the way it's presented. And I like that you can take the implied Roger/Mark or leave it, and how Mark seems horrified at the idea because all he wants to be is Roger's friend and stay that way.

Date: 2006-08-23 09:45 am (UTC)(Anyway, now that I've written a thesis statement for nothing...)
I think (if I thought with a Mark/Roger filter, which I'm not, honest) that Mark seems a bit horrified at the idea of him crushing on Roger because he totally is. A little. A boycrush. He's just so happy that he and his roommmate have gotten past the initial awkardness and become friends, he doesn't want to jeopardize it by even thinking about thinking about Roger.
And now I think I'm going to go write a 'here's how Mark met them all!' fic, told through his camera or something. Dammit. I was hoping to get something about Cindy and the kids...
(Damn, long comment. Feel special. XD)

Date: 2006-09-18 09:19 pm (UTC)You know, that's an interesting thought, about Joanne and Mark being pretty much two halves of the same person. It actually works.
And dude. I think you just nailed Mark/Roger in a nutshell. Like I actually think you have pretty much converted me to thinking of it that way and only that way, plus that Joanne/Mark/Maureen is more interesting then you'd think.
That would be awesome, the fic.
(I totally do. Especially becuase I always flag your comments to respond to, but then I get distracted and by the time I actually can, they are no longer relavant.)
