Word Count: 535
Spoilers: Some for Rampage, slightly, anyway.
Warnings: Partially AU.
Author's Notes: I cannot resist this pairing. Sigh. This fic is definitely AU, and changes the start of the relationship. Definitely very little based on canon. Just as a heads up. Heh. Dylan is my own, and previously used in Round 1 of this community. *g*
Springtime arriving would always remind Horatio of the first time he met Marisol. There were just born blossoms swirling in the breeze, and the newness of it all brought new possibilities to his life.
Her hair was tumbling down her back and she was dressed in trim linen slacks and a pale green blouse. Her brown eyes were smiling as she turned to look at him. Horatio straightened the collar of his shirt and buttoned his suit jacket. Eric slipped an arm around his sister's shoulders.
"Mari, this is my boss, Lieutenant Horatio Caine," he said. "H, this is my sister, Marisol,"
A slim, cool hand slipped into his warm, slightly rough one and grasped his fingers firmly. Horatio smiled and removed his sunglasses, hooking them on his shirt.
"Nice to meet you, Marisol," his voice was soft and sincere. Marisol smiled brilliantly.
"You too, Lieutenant," she said. "Eric's told me so much about you, I feel like I've known you for ages,"
Horatio felt his cheeks redden slightly and he saw Eric wince and turn away. She reached out to pat his arm and then leaned close.
"Sorry, Lieutenant," she said. "I couldn't help it. I live to torture my baby brother,"
He nodded and smiled.
"It's Horatio," he said.
"I'm sorry?" she replied.
"You can call me Horatio," he said, chuckling slightly. "I don't even make my team call me Lieutenant. I think Ryan did the first time I met him, and everyone gave him grief for months,"
Marisol flashed a grin.
"All right then, Horatio," she said his name and a shiver went up his spine. It was from that moment that he knew his life was about to make a complete turnaround.
Springtime meant their anniversary. It had been five years since they were married, and five years since the day he almost lost her. There was no doubt that either of them would ever forget that day, She still had the scar from the surgery and sometimes, Horatio couldn't help but run his fingers over the raised skin and thank God that she was still alive.
He remembered sitting by the bed when the monitors went wild and doctors rushed in. Despite the blood loss and the loss of consciousness several times, Eric's soft but stern plea for her to fight and live sank in. The doctors rushed Marisol in for a second surgery, and when she awoke in the recovery room, Horatio was standing there, his blue eyes worried, but relieved. He let out a quiet sigh when he saw her eyes flutter open and her face slowly morph into a smile.
"Hi," he spoke softly, his hand smoothing her hair from her face. She smiled sleepily, but lifted a pale hand to cup his cheek. It was that simple touch that made him know she would be okay.
The year following the shooting, when spring came around again, their first child, a son they named Dylan Michael, arrived in the Caine household. Horatio knew instantly that the birth of their son would not only make sure he remembered his anniversary and Dylan's birthday, but he knew little else could top springtime as his favorite time of the year.
