Spoilers: none

Disclaimer: Dark Angel belongs to James Cameron, Charles H. Eglee, and Fox.
Author's Notes: set pre-series.
Summary: There are two things that have remained consistent in Jondy's life.
There are two things that have remained constant in Jondy’s life since she turned sixteen. The first is that she changes her look on a weekly basis (something that always prompts Zach to tease her about her chameleon ways.) And the second is that Zach always manages to find her no matter where she runs to, even though she’s been running away from him since her sixteenth birthday when she was confused about her feelings for him and his subsequent rejection of her.
Sometimes when Zach has found her, he’ll ask her before he leaves if she’ll ever settle with just one look. Jondy always responds with a demure smile and the one word answer of Maybe. He never asks her if she’ll stop running from him or if she’ll actually stay in one place long enough for him to come back to her. It’s an unspoken rule between them but they don’t talk about his leaving and her running. It doesn’t matter that Jondy knows that he has to leave to check in with the others, to make sure that they’re still safe. It always feels like he’s leaving her behind, like he’s rejecting her once more.
This time around he finds her in some dive bar in L.A. with her hair dyed a crimson red that’s not found in nature. She’s dressed all in black: tight black leather pants paired with an equally tight black cotton tank top. Draped on the stool, there’s a black denim jacket that looks short and tight to him. Despite the fact that every pair of eyes in the place is on her as she moves with a cat-like fluidity, she looks dangerous and determined and she doesn’t care audience. For a moment, Zach is worried about what it could mean until she throws her arms around his neck and kisses him.
She tastes of tequila, lime and sex and she makes him grown when she moves away from him with a smile on her lips. He’s forgotten what he was thinking about when she kissed him and he wonders when she had become such a flirt. Zach can’t help but think that two years of chasing Jondy is definitely long enough for her to have grown up and to have grown out of the childhood crush that she once had for him.
Jondy laughs before she downs the shot of tequila that the bored waitress had set out in front of her. And he watches every moment that she makes from the way she picks up the shot glass and then slams it back down onto the table as she licks her lower lip.
It suddenly becomes obvious to him that she’s in heat and he doesn’t really care. He’d rather it be him than one of the sleazy looking patrons at the bar who can’t seem to take their eyes off of her. And if he was just a bit more honest with himself, he’d admit that he wants it to be him because he’s wanted her for as long as he can remember.
He pulls her to him with a slight growl and claims her mouth. He vows that he’s not going to let her go this time and he lets her drag him out of the bar and to her apartment. They can barely keep their hands and mouths off of one another.
Her apartment isn’t far from the bar and it’s a dump. There’s no better word for it, but neither of them really care since they both know it’s doubtful that she’ll be here past the end of the month. He falls onto the mattress with her on top of him and he breaks their kiss.
Are you sure?
She rolls her eyes at him before she moves to kiss him again but he holds her back again.
I’m serious Jondy. You know that I can’t stay and I don’t want this to be just because you’re in heat.
He could kill himself for his clumsiness, but he doesn’t know how to soften the words. He wants her but nothing will change just because they end up having sex. Nothing can ever change until Lydecker’s dead and Manticore’s burned to the ground, two things that he’s pretty certain he’ll never accomplish. She sighs but she doesn’t move away from him.
Yeah I am sure. I’m a big girl now.
Jondy…
Don’t Zach. Don’t make this into anything more than it is. Okay?
She’s casually breaking his heart even though he’s pretty certain that she loves him. It’s the world that they live in and the world that they will always live in. It doesn’t stop him from gripping her hips tightly and pulling her down to capture her mouth with his. Even the thought that in the morning, he’ll wake up to an empty bed with her gone doesn’t stop him.
