Author's Notes: Yep, cried writing this. I am a sap, what can I say.
The room was eerily quiet save for the sound of Denny's shallow breathing. Izzie then swallowed noisily and George's eyes widened.
"Izzie," he said quietly. Denny's tear-filled eyes shifted to look at George, who couldn't even give him a reassuring one back.
Suddenly, the door opened and Meredith and Cristina shuffled in and everything started to go crazy. Izzie whispered to Denny, and he didn't say much, except to ask for a kiss.
Izzie kissed his lips deeply, stroking her thumbs across his cheeks. His eyes were watery and tired, but he nods weakly. Cristina says something nasty that only Izzie snaps back at, and Meredith's voice is calm as she tries to stop Izzie from doing whatever she's about to do.
"It'll be okay," she said. "It's all going to be okay,"
Her hands lifted and the other interns gasped as the scissors cut Denny's LVAD wire. Everyone's heads turned to watch Denny, who went limp mere seconds later, the machine helping to keep him alive dead as a doornail.
Suddenly, the room was bustling. Izzie's mind was frantic, and all sane thought was slipping from her as she, George, Meredith, and Cristina try to save Denny's life. If Denny dies, she dies too. None of them could remember what medicine they needed to keep his heart beating at a decent pace, and Izzie was already self-pumping his heart.
Cristina had disappeared for a while and came back pale and shaky, letting them know that Burke had been shot. Izzie's own hands began to shake, but she willed her true fear into the back of her throat so she wouldn’t throw up everywhere.
The interns were scared, but knew they had to do everything they could to keep Denny alive and breathing, or he'd slip away faster than anyone could imagine, receiving a new heart or not. His eyes fluttered open, and Meredith was the one who saw the worry and fear in his eyes.
"Guys, we need to calm down," she said quietly. "We need to figure out how to help Denny first and foremost,"
No one saw her hand creep out to pat his gently. Denny's head turned weakly.
"It—it sounds like Meredith has a plan," he spoke softly. Izzie's head shot up and she looked at her friend, whose normally pale face was flushed and her blue eyes were steady. Meredith's voice was calm as well, as she rummaged in a drawer and finally found a syringe with the label she recognized.
All hell broke loose not a half hour later, as they were busted by Bailey and Denny was taken into emergency surgery to give him the heart he so desperately needed and that Izzie had fought so hard to get him.
He awoke a few hours later, and had asked Izzie to marry him again and she'd accepted, knowing how close she'd come to losing him. He smiled and she'd let him rest, telling him she'd be back before going to the dance that the Chief and his wife were setting up for their niece. She wanted to be sure he saw her dress. He'd smiled and she'd kissed him, her fingers running lightly over the bandage on his chest.
"Bye," she beamed.
"Bye," he replied, winking. She'd walked out, one last glance at the man she'd fallen too hard for way too quickly. She was in love with him.
And now, just three hours later, he was dead and she hadn't even gotten a chance to try and save him—again. Denny had finally gone and slipped away from her and Izzie's life was over with one blood clot that had changed everything.
