Hawkes rubbed his eyes as he took the elevator back down to the floor they were keeping Flack on. It had been a hard day. A very hard day. The only way he could even try to make sense of it all was to speak to the other doctors...and it hadn't really helped.
When the elevator let out a soft ding he stepped off and moved down the hall, coffee cup in hand. He really didn't want to go home. Turning around the corner, he spotted Stella sitting outside the room still. He quietly sat beside her and watched her for a moment. Her eyes were closed and she was leaned back against the wall.
“Stell,” he finally spoke up softly. She jumped slightly and turned to look at him.
“What're you still doing here?”
“Same as you, I guess.”
She nodded and rearranged herself in the seat. “Mac went to find some snacks.”
Hawkes nodded and looked down at his coffee, then offered it over. Stella took it with a thankful smile and took a long sip. “He's gonna be okay,” he offered gently.
“I know,” she answered, taking another sip then handing the cup back. “It's...it's still hard.”
“It is.” He nodded and took the cup in one hand. His other hand wrapped over hers warmly and gave it a squeeze. “He'll be okay,” he repeated, as though trying to convince himself.
Stella turned to look at him and he looked back, holding her gaze, both of them quiet for several moments. “And if he's not?” She finally asked softly.
His jaw set and he shook his head, staring at her straight on. “He will,” he said firmly. He held her hand tighter. She just nodded and closed her eyes again, resting her head back to the wall. Hawkes sat at her side and held her hand until he spotted Mac coming down the hall, then carefully moved his hand to his side and looked to the floor.
