Tony liked to say that Hannah's smile could bring light to any dark day. Even when she was furious with the world, she never failed to flash a grin at him.
He remembered the fist time he saw that smile back in college. He'd helped her pick up her books in the middle of the quad and she'd pushed her wire-rimmed glasses up on her nose and had smiled shyly. Within minutes of their first conversation, her smile had grown larger and he was lost in it.
He picked up his phone and said her name, hearing the number dial immediately.
"Hey you," Hannah answered after only a couple of rings. "Aren't you supposed to be at work?"
"Hey, who says I'm not?" Tony said, cradling his phone against his shoulder.
"Because I haven't heard you say 'ow', which means Gibbs hasn't slapped you for making a personal call, therefore making me deduce that you are, in fact, at home, not at headquarters," she said, laughing.
"Well, you'd be wrong, thankyouverymuch," Tony said, quickly glancing around headquarters and praying that Gibbs wasn't nearby. "I am at work. Doing some research for a case before everyone comes in."
She could hear him tap the keys on his keyboard for a moment. She sighed.
"Tony?" Hannah said. "I love you and all, but is there a reason you called other than to say hi? I'm at work too, and I have got to get this piece done and edited ASAP."
"Of course I have a reason, Han," Tony replied. "I—OW!"
Hannah heard the resounding smack of the palm of Gibbs' hand hitting the back of Tony's head and she started to laugh, the sound tinny as Tony held the phone away from his ear, wincing in pain. Gibbs snatched the phone from the younger man's hand.
"Hi Hannah," he said. "I'll get him to leave you alone now. He needs to gear up."
"Hi Gibbs," Hannah was still snickering. "Thank you. Oh hey, could you do me a favor?"
"Sure."
"Tell Ducky thanks for the info. He'll know what I mean by that."
"You got it. Tell her goodbye, DiNozzo," she heard Gibbs say.
"Goodbye, Han," Tony's voice was pouty. She giggled.
"Bye, hon," Hannah replied. "Call me later."
She hung up and Tony sighed as he flipped his phone shut and shoved it into the pocket of his slacks. Ziva flashed him an oddly sympathetic look and the corner of his mouth twitched up.
Suddenly, he felt his pocket begin to vibrate and he slid his phone back out. A message flashed on the screen and he opened it. Grinning up at him was Hannah, taking a self-portrait. A text message labeled the picture.
I love you. Hope the case goes okay today. Call me tonight. –H
Smiling, he tucked his phone away, grabbed his bag and hurried to catch up with Gibbs in the elevator. He slid in as the doors started to close, ready to dive into work for the day.
