After the fall of the Dark Lord, all that was left was to search out the remaining wizards who remained loyal to their cause. Hermione, Harry and Ron had become aurors and they joined the search for the dark wizards. One by one, the remaining Death Eaters were rounded up and sent to Azkaban. Hermione was assigned the task of hunting down the infamous Bellatrix Lestrange and she had mixed emotions about the dark witch. There was something elusive and dangerous about the Bellatrix and Hermione secretly that she would fail at finding Bellatrix. Even though Hermione was serious about her chosen profession and she typically gave her work everything that she had, Bellatrix terrified her in ways that made her want to abandon her work ethic.
Hermione saw Bellatrix as the dark side of herself. Bellatrix was completely loyal to the Dark Lord just as Hermione was loyal to Harry. She knew that there was nothing that she wouldn’t do for Harry, including sacrificing herself for Harry. When it came down to it, Harry was more important than anything else in Hermione’s life. There was nothing that she wouldn’t do for him so that he would succeed in his fight with the Dark Lord and his Death Eaters. And she knew that Bellatrix would have done anything for the Dark Lord, and she didn’t doubt that if there was a way that Bellatrix could resurrect the Dark Lord, she would. Hunting down Bellatrix Lestrange was forcing Hermione to confront something within herself that she hadn’t wanted to confront for the longest time.
Confronting Bellatrix forced Hermione to confront the darkness that lurked underneath the surface. The dark arts had tempted Hermione on more than one occasion, especially at the height of Harry’s fight with the Dark Lord. She knew that if Harry had needed it, she would have allowed herself to give into the temptation. Even now, she would still sacrifice everything to protect Harry. Her magic was a gift and one that she would use to Harry’s advantage just like Bellatrix had used her talent to the Dark Lord’s advantage. Neither Harry nor the Dark Lord had ever asked for such devoted and slavish loyalty from either Hermione or Bellatrix. Instead both witches gave it freely because of the love that they possessed for Harry and the Dark Lord. It was the selfless love of the faithful who would willingly follow their leader anywhere irregardless of the cause.
In some way Bellatrix and Hermione were two sides of the same coin and Hermione was afraid of what would happen when she finally found and confronted Bellatrix Lestrange. Hermione didn’t know if she could bring down the Death Eater if it came down to a duel. Even though the young witch knew that Bellatrix would have no qualms about destroying Hermione, she still felt something inside of her at the thought of destroying the witch that she could have been. Yet her love, devotion and loyalty to Harry meant that she had to ensure Bellatrix’s destruction because she was the largest remaining threat to Harry in the post-Voldemort world.
